Given that one of the best sources of Vitamin D is exposure to sunlight, you wouldn’t think that having a Vitamin D deficiency would be very common. However, it has become more common in recent years, and doctors have begun to see an increase in conditions related to a lack of Vitamin D, primarily due to an increased concern over skin cancer which has prompted many people to reduce the amount of time they spend in the sun. As a result, conditions related to Vitamin D deficiency have been slowly rising. Without a sufficient amount of Vitamin D, the body is unable to effectively absorb calcium and phosphorus, which negatively impacts the growth and development of bones, cells, and teeth. This impacts bone strength, and many sports injuries such as stress fractures, may be the result of a Vitamin D deficiency. The body is also unable to properly regulate hormones, which can lead to problems with both the immune and nervous systems. In addition, Vitamin D deficiency can lead to rickets, depression, fatigue, osteoporosis, obesity and high blood pressure. Many studies also show a Vitamin D deficiency can increase the risk factor for developing Type II diabetes.

One of the best sources of Vitamin D is the sun. Even spending as little as 15 minutes can make a significant difference in your Vitamin D levels, and can correct a Vitamin D deficiency in just a short amount of time. In addition, there are several foods which are a great source of Vitamin D including eggs, fortified milk or cereal, and fatty fish such as tuna, salmon, and mackerel. If your doctor feels that your Vitamin D levels are not sufficient, he may also recommend taking a Vitamin D supplement on a daily basis.
